The Philadelphia Eagles ended the Kansas City Chiefs’ bid to win an unprecedented three straight Super Bowls as they ran out 40-22 winners in New Orleans. The Eagles defence dominated and pressured Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes throughout the evening, sacking him a career-high six times and intercepting him twice.
Opposite number Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, as well as scoring one himself, as the Eagles avenged their defeat to the Chiefs two years ago. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley broke the NFL season rushing record, including the post-season, beating the record of the Denver Broncos Terrell Davis.
No team had previously won back-to-back titles and returned to the Super Bowl, but the Chiefs rarely looked like completing the treble and a fourth win in six years.
The Eagles were denied a promising field position on the opening possession when AJ Brown was adjudged to have fouled cornerback Trent McDuffie after catching a 30-yard pass from Hurts on fourth down. They went close again midway through the first quarter, but having been ruled down a yard short they opened the scoring when Hurts was driven over from close range.
Hurts looked to stretch the advantage early in the second quarter, but his attempted pass was intercepted by Bryan Cook.
The Chiefs, dogged by a couple of early penalties and their traditional slow Super Bowl start, struggled to make inroads and their offence spent little time on the field with their first three drives ending in punts. The Eagles stretched their advantage midway through the second quarter, Jake Elliott added a 48-yard field goal after being moved back five yards by another penalty.
Mahomes’ difficult evening continued as he was sacked for a second time on the first down after the score. It got worse on the next play, Cooper DeJean intercepting his pass and returning it 38 yards for a touchdown on his 22nd birthday, Elliott adding the extra point to make it 17-0. Mahomes was sacked again as the Chiefs again failed to respond and were forced to punt.
Worse was to come for the quarterback, linebacker Zack Baun intercepting him deep in Chiefs territory and the Eagles took full advantage with Hurts finding Brown for another touchdown.
More penalties dogged the Chiefs’ final drive of the half as they reached the break 24-0 down - the second-highest half-time deficit in the Super Bowl - after a mere 23 yards of offence.
The second half started in much the same fashion, the Eagles sacking Mahomes again as the Chiefs were once more forced to punt. The Eagles were stopped near the Chiefs line, but Elliott was able to stretch the gap with a field goal.
That lead grew even further after another stalled Chiefs drive, Hurts finding DeVonta Smith from 46 yards for another touchdown.
The Chiefs finally got on the scoreboard just before the end of the third quarter, Mahomes finding Xavier Worth to get them into Eagles territory and then connecting with the same player from almost on the sideline. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Another Elliott field goal stretched the gap to 37-6 and he struck again from 50 yards after the Chiefs defence once more sacked Mahomes and recovered the ball.
A seven-yard touchdown catch by DeAndre Hopkins and a 50-yard effort from Xavier Worthy late on, both with two-point conversions, gave the scoreline a less lopsided appearance.

Struggles for the Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes has thrown for just 33 yards, has been sacked three times and intercepted twice, including throwing a pick six. He has very rarely had a game like this in his career. In his one Super Bowl defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 the Chiefs lost 31-9 and the Buccaneers defence stifled him that night. Can Mahomes and the Chiefs offence respond after a horrid first half?

End of the first half

DeJean receives the punt and takes it up a few yards. 23 seconds left in this first half.

Mahomes finds Brown over the middle with a quick nine-yard completion.
01:13 AM GMT

01:12 AM GMT
1st down and 10 KC: KC 0 PHI 24
There have been very, very few occasions in his NFL career where Mahomes has looked anywhere near as poor as he has been tonight. It looks like he is playing in his first Super Bowl, not going for his third straight title.
Mahomes is under pressure and looks like he might get sacked but escapes and scurries up field. His positive run though is chalked off as the Chiefs are penalised for holding, pushing them back ten yards.
01:08 AM GMT
TOUCHDOWN EAGLES!
Brown may have just had a confrontation with his head coach but he is celebrating now. He comes across the field and Hurts finds him. Bolton cannot get to Brown and the wide receiver strolls in for the touchdown. Elliott lands the extra point.
The Eagles lead 24-0!
01:06 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
The Eagles offence starts with the ball on the Chiefs 14-yard line and Hurts carries up the middle for a few yards. The Chiefs take a timeout to stop the clock.
01:05 AM GMT
INTERCEPTION!
Mahomes is picked off for the second time tonight. He sends a pass over the middle and Baun, who has been brilliant for this Eagles defence this season, reads the eyes brilliantly and intercepts the pass.
01:04 AM GMT
4th down and 3 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Despite being 17 points ahead, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and Brown are involved in a confrontation on the sidelines.
Eagles punter Mann sends the kick inside the Chiefs’ 10-yard line.
01:03 AM GMT
3rd down and 3 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
This feels like a big play. If the Eagles get a first down, they could add more points and run the clock down. If the Chiefs get a stop, they could get the ball in the hands of Mahomes before the half.
The Chiefs bring a big blitz and Hurts tries to find Brown down the field but they are not on the same page and the throw is incomplete, forcing an Eagles punt.
12:59 AM GMT
2nd down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Hurts gets the throw off just before he is hit but picks out Goedert, who catches it just before going out of bounds three yards shy of the first down. We hit the two-minute warning.
12:58 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Gainwell is given the ball and it looks certain that he will lose yards but just about manages to get back to the line of scrimmage. The Chiefs then take their first timeout of the half just before the two-minute warning.
12:57 AM GMT
2nd down and 26 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Hurts tries to find Barkley but misses. However flags are thrown as the Chiefs are penalised for unnecessary roughness as Bolton took Barkley out after the play. That gives the Eagles a first down when they were massively backed up.
12:56 AM GMT
1st down and 20 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Hurts is sacked and the Eagles lose more yards after the penalty.
12:55 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17

12:54 AM GMT
2nd down and 1 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Hurts carries himself up the middle and gets the first down with time ticking down in this second quarter. The Eagles will want to not only drive down the field to add more points but also take time out of the game and keep the ball out of the hands of Mahomes.
12:54 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 17
Barkley carries up the middle for nine yards.
12:51 AM GMT
4th down and 16 KC: KC 0 PHI 17
DeJean calls for a fair catch on his 35-yard line and the Eagles are currently in complete control of this match. Knowing what Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Chiefs can do though, the Eagles need to keep their foot on the throat and take advantage of their current dominance.
At the end of this quarter we will be treated to the half-time show, performed this year by Kendrick Lamar. We have a dedicated blog for the performance.
12:50 AM GMT
3rd down and 9 KC: KC 0 PHI 17

How will the Chiefs respond? Ojomo wraps up Pacheco quickly and the Chiefs lose two yards at the start of this drive.
12:44 AM GMT
PICK SIX FOR THE EAGLES
What a moment for rookie DeJean! Mahomes rolls out to his right and fires a throw up-field but is picked off by cornerback DeJean, who runs it back and sneaks into the end zone down the right touchline for a pick six. The second round pick out of Iowa in the 2024 NFL Draft is celebrating his birthday today like teammate Saquon Barkley and that is an incredible moment for the 22-year-old. Elliott lands the extra point.
The Eagles lead by 17 points.
12:42 AM GMT
2nd down and 14 KC: KC 0 PHI 10
Back-to-back sacks for the Eagles as Hunt this time brings Mahomes down.

12:38 AM GMT
FIELD GOAL EAGLES!
Elliott sneaks the kick inside the right-hand upright.
The Eagles lead 10-0.
12:37 AM GMT
4th down and 3 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
Flags thrown before Elliott can attempt the field goal. It is given as a false start on the long snapper, which looks a dubious call as it looked like the Chiefs may have jumped. The Eagles move back five yards.
12:36 AM GMT
4th down and 3 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
The Eagles offence lines up to go for it on fourth down but they take a timeout and will instead go for the field goal.
12:35 AM GMT
3rd down and 5 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7

Hurts throws to Barkley out to his left and the running back makes three yards.
12:34 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
Eagles go quickly and Barkley carries for a couple of yards.
12:33 AM GMT
3rd down and 7 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
A terrific throw from Hurts to Brown’s back shoulder for the first down. McDuffie complaining about a push from Brown but no way is he getting another pass interference.
12:32 AM GMT
2nd down and 11 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
Hurts is forced out of the pocket but manages to run for a few yards to make it a more manageable third down.
12:32 AM GMT
1st down and 10 PHI: KC 0 PHI 7
Good field position to start this drive for the Eagles offence. Barkley makes nothing on his latest carry and the Chiefs defence is so far doing a great job of stuffing Barkley.
12:28 AM GMT
4th down and 3 KC: KC 0 PHI 7
Araiza punts from his own end zone and De Jean returns to his own 45-yard line.

Eagles lead 7-0.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts on Super Bowl rematch with the Chiefs

“Every game has its lessons - good, bad or indifferent. So just being able to become wiser, grow and mature and take all of those lessons in, it has had a great driving force.
“It lit a flame, lit a fire in me, and to have this opportunity again is exactly what you work for.”

Trump at the Super Bowl
President Donald Trump heads to the Super Bowl on Sunday, the first sitting president to do so in person.
Mr Trump will watch the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in the Superdome in New Orleans, where all eyes will be on the field and, no doubt some, on his reactions.
His visit, roughly three weeks after he launched his second term at the White House with executive orders to crack down on immigration and end government diversity programs, will put the Republican president at the scene of a classic American pastime that connects people of all political ideologies.
It also highlights the contrast between Trump’s order to eliminate government diversity, equity and inclusion efforts with the NFL’s decision to stick with its own initiatives to promote inclusion.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who could come into contact with Trump at the game, said on Monday he had no plans to scale back NFL diversity programs.
The league is not putting the phrase “End Racism” behind one of the end zones, something it has done since 2021, replacing that directive with another one: “Choose Love.”
During his first term in office Trump criticized the league and its members after Black players kneeled during the US national anthem to bring attention to racial injustice.
Last year, as a presidential candidate, Mr Trump ran ads during football games blasting his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, for her stance on transgender rights. “Kamala’s for they/them; President Trump is for you,” the ad said.
It proved effective, and Mr Trump has continued his crackdown on trans rights from the White House, last week signing an executive order seeking to exclude transgender girls and women from female sports.
He will be one of many celebrities at the game. Superstar singer Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce, is also expected to be in the stadium. She endorsed Harris in the 2024 election. (Reporting by Jeff Mason; Editing by Mary Milliken and David Gregorio)

“It is a great honour I think, no matter who the president is.
“I am excited because it is the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there – it is the best country in the world so it would be pretty cool.”
On retirement rumours:
“I have thought about it, but I still love what I do. I love coming into work every day,.
“It is moments like these, weeks like these, the month that we just had in the playoffs that make me feel like I could play this game forever.”
“I feel like I still have a lot of good football left in me.”

Tom Brady on the call for the game for FOX Sports
“I love seeing other people achieve great things, and anything Patrick [Mahomes] is doing, I do not believe will ever detract from what I accomplished in my career,” Brady said.
“The reality is we all have our journeys. The comparisons are fun naturally for the media because it serves a different perspective and context that people can write and talk about. But as a competitor that I was, I never viewed it that way, and I still do not today, even in the role that I am in now.”

Patrick Mahomes mounts assault on Tom Brady’s GOAT legacy
Tom Brady’s role as Fox Sports commentator is rather well paid, to put it mildly. The most successful player in NFL history, winner of seven Super Bowls – six with the New England Patriots, one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – joined the corporation on a £300 million contract over 10 years, following a 23-year career as a quarterback that earned Brady a mere £267 million.
This season has been Brady’s first as a commentator and while he has not been a disaster, his work has come under extraordinary scrutiny, for two reasons. The first is that Brady replaced the highly regarded Greg Olsen as Fox’s lead co-commentator, despite Olsen excelling as an analyst during the Super Bowl two years ago. Naturally, Fox wanted its substantial investment to be part of its top commentary team. Olsen, a former Pro Bowl tight end, remains the better analyst and perhaps always will be, but it will be Brady who commentates for Fox on the Super Bowl in New Orleans this Sunday.
The second reason is the complicated relationship between Brady the commentator and Brady the minority owner, given his five per cent share in the Las Vegas Raiders. As a result of his stake in a rival NFL franchise, Brady has been unable to criticise officials or to enter a rival team’s facility for the usual pre-game television production meetings. The result of which is that you get a slightly filtered version of Brady as a commentator, which is hardly ideal.

Bad blood makes Taylor Swift v Donald Trump the real Super Bowl showdown
The Super Bowl is the one American Football game most Britons pay attention to, but you may detect reduced excitement for this year’s edition.
It is a rematch of the 2023 game, the Philadelphia Eagles facing the Kansas City Chiefs, with the latter eyeing a third consecutive title as they build a dynasty to rival the Tom Brady-era New England Patriots.
The Eagles are gritty, driven less by quarterback Jalen Hurts’s passing than Saquon Barkley’s running, a retro tactic presumed dead. Their most famous move is known as the “tush push”, deployed close to the goal-line when the Eagles’ group of large men try to exert enough force on Hurts’s rear to push him past the other team’s group of large men.
Potentially non-thrilling fare for gridiron sceptics, but a sideshow has emerged. Donald Trump will become the first sitting US president to attend the marquee game in New Orleans. Also in attendance, possibly Trump’s most famous enemy, and certainly a more dangerous one than Kamala Harris, the partner of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce: Taylor Swift.

Super Bowl 59 preview
The Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to make history tonight in New Orleans as they are searching for their third successive Super Bowl title as they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59. The Chiefs coule make history tonight as they bid to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. These franchises met in the Super Bowl two years ago, with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs coming out on top 38-35 in Arizona. Then last year the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime to make it back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
The Chiefs, who won the AFC West for the ninth successive time and were the number one seed in the AFC, booked their place in a third successive Super Bowl after beating the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship game. They are in their fifth Super Bowl in the last six seasons. The Los Angeles Lakers were the last team in American professional sports to win three consecutive titles after winning the NBA Championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Chiefs currently have four Super Bowls to their name and are aiming to go level with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers in joint-second on the all-time list on five titles.
The Eagles, who finished the regular season 14-3 as NFC East division champions, earned their spot in the Super Bowl courtesy of a 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game. Their one and only Super Bowl victory came in 2017, when they beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 41-33. In their ranks is the Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley. The running back joined the team last offseason from division rivals the New York Giants and finished just shy of the single-season rushing record. He needs just 30 more rushing yards to break Terrell Davis’ all-time single-season record including the playoffs and will be key if the Eagles are to go on and lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
New Orleans as a city is hosting the Super Bowl for the 11th time, with this being the eighth at tonight’s host stadium Caesars Superdome. The most recent was back in 2013 when the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers, which was an infamous game as there was a black-out mid-game. The half-time show will be headlined by 17-time Grammy Award-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar but will he be trumped (you get it?) by the presence of a certain Taylor Swift supporting her boyfriend and Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce? US president Donald Trump is also going to be in attendance tonight.
Who will be lifting the Vince Lombardi trophy at the end of the night? Will it be the Chiefs for the third straight year or the Eagles for the second time in franchise history? Stay with us for all the action with kick-off from New Orleans is at 11.30pm UK time.
